Eggnog, a rich seasonal drink has become a holiday and winter favorite beverage. Commercial or homemade, the varied ingredients make it a treat for every diet and taste.
The origin of eggnog fluctuates between US and England, depending who is telling the story. There are now commercial eggnogs, low fat eggnogs, reduced fat, nondairy, alcoholic and nonalcoholic eggnogs, to name only a few. There is an eggnog to suit every taste and need. Basic Traditional EggnogChristmas or winter eggnog is based on a dozen beaten egg yolks and ½ cup of sugar to which whiskey and rum and/or Brandy are added. The whites are then whipped up together with another ½ cup of sugar and lightly whipped heavy cream. This combination is topped with nutmeg and placed in the refrigerator to chill. Variations are first beating the whites and sugar and adding alcohol and then whipping up the yolks with some whole milk added. (The alcohol can be left out for an eggnog for children and for those who dont drink). Combine all ingredients; add vanilla, chill and top with nutmeg. Basic traditional eggnog can be purchased at the grocery store or liquor store already made. It is usually delightful but many prefer to keep a tradition of making their own unique sweet creamy drink. Vary the Alcohol of the EggnogThe above recipes can be perked up, if needed, with unique flavoring.
