Whiskey is a big business throughout the world. Learn how it is made, distributed and enjoyed throughout the world by taking a class that covers these areas.

The business of alcohol is big business throughout the world. From the master distillers who make the recipes, to the bottling companies, to advertising companies, to the distributors that stock the shelves, there are a lot of people who make their living off the business of alcohol.

The spirit whisky is no different. Whether interested in a career in domestic whisky, imported whisky, bourbon, Scotch whisky, or any other variety getting an education or in depth knowledge of the process of making of whisky allows people to be competitive in that field.

Take a College Course in Whisky

True Scotch whisky must be produced in Scotland. Therefore when it comes to taking a class in the fine beverage, look no further than the colleges in Scotland. Glasgow Metropolitan College offers a course that lasts about 8 weeks in the history of making Whisky. And while in Scotland, be sure to check out the Spirit of Speyside Festival. Held once a year and associated with Moray College, they also provide a training and education course for beginners and connoisseurs alike.

Learn a Bit about Bourbon

Bourbon is a bit different than its Scotch whisky counterpart. Made in America, bourbon must contain at least 51 percent corn is below 180 proof. Bourbon is also thought to be “sweeter” than Scotch whisky. To learn more about the beverage of bourbon visit the Maker’s Mark distillery. During the course of the year, they offer classes at their Stillhouse University facility that delves into the history and tradition of making the beverage.

Get an Education on the Business of Whiskey and Borubon

If looking to participate in a bourbon or whisky career, then joining associations or attending association events is a great way to meet and make business contacts. The American Distilling Institute offers yearly conferences as does the Kentucky Distillers Association. Both are great resources for novices and professionals alike.

Is there a Degree in Whiskey?

While getting a degree in whiskey might be tough to come by, except for those few colleges previously mentioned, if the beverage business is what one desires, obtain a degree in food science. The food science degree will teach the basics behind how alcohol is made, and how that alcohol becomes the wonderful whiskey that so many people enjoy throughout the world today.

In the Mood for a Martini

If thirst needs to be quenched and only whiskey will do the trick, make a “Manhattan.” A simple combination of 4 parts bourbon to 1 part sweet vermouth either over ice or shaken in a cocktail shaker with ice will be sure to please. Garnish with a cherry, sip, sit and enjoy
