Try a twist on the classic hot chocolate recipe, by using this recipe that compines the bold flavors of coffee, with the sweet flavors of brandy and chocolate.

When the cool, crisp days of fall begin to slide into the short cold days of winter, certain seasonal beverages come to mind. Egg nog is surely popular around the holidays, as is a little beverage called hot chocolate. Consisting of some form of chocolate mixed with heated milk or water, it is often served to children after coming in from playing in the snow, or to guests who have traveled from a far in the cold to visit family and friends.

In North America, hot chocolate was first introduced by the Dutch settlers during the 1600’s, with the first mention of the colonists selling it to one another in the mid-18th century. There are many forms of hot chocolate throughout the world that mix milk, cream or water with a bevy of chocolates from hearty dark chocolate to milk chocolate. However, among these many variations, one thing remains the same. Hot chocolate is meant to be enjoyed quickly so that the beverage never fully cools down.

Next time family or friends are coming over for a holiday gathering, create a signature beverage for them to enjoy. While the kids can have traditional hot chocolate, try this recipe for Holiday Hot Chocolate at the next holiday party or Christmas Party extravaganza.

Holiday Hot Chocolate Recipe

Things You’ll Need

  • Black coffee
  • Dark chocolate
  • Sugar
  • Coffee liquer
  • Dark crème de cacao
  • Brandy
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows
  • Espresso cups or coffee cups (for serving)

Assembling the Holiday Hot Chocolate Beverage

  1. Brew a pot of strong black coffee. (The coffee, rather than water, milk or cream will be the basis of the beverage, so the better the beans, the better the drink.)
  2. Chop one pound of dark chocolate roughly.
  3. In a saucepan, over low heat, combine 4 cups of coffee (using the 6 ounce coffee serving rule, so 24 ounces total), the chopped dark chocolate, and a half cup of sugar.
  4. Stir this mixture until the sugar and the chocolate has completely dissolved in the coffee.
  5. Add 6 ounces of coffee liquer to the sauce pan, followed by 6 ounces of the dark crème de cacao and 4 ounces of brandy.
  6. Quickly heat the mixture through, being sure not to let the drink “cook” to long, otherwise the alcohol will burn off.
  7. Pour the beverage into small espresso or coffee cups.
  8. Top the beverage with a garnish of small marshmallows or a dollop of whipped cream and serve hot. This recipe will yield 6 to 8 servings.
