It's the lament of single women everywhere - how do I meet great guys? Now there's a book to help women make the first move.

If the title doesn't clue readers in, the dedication should: "To those who think it's lame to wait for the Hot Guy to come to you - this is for you." The traditional assumption is that women have it easy, especially pretty ones. Bat the eyelashes, smile seductively, flip the hair, and it's all over. But not all women are super models, and not all men seem to realize that the eyelashes, the smile, and the hair are signals. How does the average woman spotting the average guy get the ball rolling?

Making the First Move

It's a big question, and author Samantha Scholfield has the answer. In Screw Cupid: The Sassy Girl's Guide to Picking Up Hot Guys, Scholfield puts her own dating trials and tribulations to work to find the best methods for making the first move and breaking the ice. She also takes a look at the worst methods, which in many cases, are the very things that women have been advised to do in the past.

What are some of the things on her "No" list? The details vary, but there are two major themes. Forget the idea that if a man is interested, he'll go out of his way to make the first move, especially if he's interested in a woman that's out with a large group of friends. And the too-direct approach that telegraphs "I'm really interested in you, what do you think of me?" is often counter-productive. Now what?

The New Way to Meet Guys

It's time to be pro-active, and Scholfield is leading the way. She asks, and answers, a question that almost every single woman has had at some time or other. "Why do I always get the most interest from the guys I'm not trying to attract?" Scholfield's techniques take advantage of two parts of human nature - the tendency to want the unavailable, and the tendency to be more comfortable when feeling in control of the situation.

Screw Cupid outlines ways to make the first move naturally. There is a variety of conversational openings, as well as ideas for what to do and say to keep the conversation flowing smoothly. Some may bristle at the idea of manipulating an encounter or referring to how to pick up a guy without him knowing he's getting picked up, but Scholfield offers common-sense advice that works. Isn't that the goal?

And Scholfield offers her advice with a witty style that is a pleasure to read. It doesn't read like a dating blueprint, it reads like a conversation with a close friend. She describes her own experiences, both good and bad, and doesn't pull any punches when detailing where she went wrong. The reader comes away knowing that Scholfield has been through the same dating obstacle course that so many face, and it's encouraging to know that it's possible to succeed. Screw Cupid is one of the most useful and practical dating guides in a long time, and it's almost an added bonus that it's also fun to read.
