The Wine Lover's Martini is simple to make and easy to serve at any upcoming dinner party or event. The bouquet of flavors that can be created is endless.

When it comes to mixing a martini, many people think of vodka, vermouth, and gin as a basis for a standard martini. However, rarely do they think of utilizing wine. Adding wine to a martini is a wonderful way to layer in the complex flavors associated with the wine making process alongside the spirits that have so skillfully been distilled. Here is a recipe for The Wine Lover’s Martini that will leave your connoisseurs seriously impressed.

Things You’ll Need

  • Vodka
  • Red wine
  • Dark Rum
  • An orange
  • Knife
  • Shaker
  • Crushed ice
  • Martini glasses

Assembling the Drink

  1. Cut the orange in half.
  2. Remove the peel from half of the orange.
  3. Slice the orange peel into smaller pieces that will fit comfortably into the shaker.
  4. Place the pieces of orange peel into the shaker. (The peel will help infuse the spirit and wine flavors from the zest of the orange.)
  5. Squeeze the juice from the half peeled orange into the shaker.
  6. Add 1 oz. of red wine to the shaker.
  7. Follow with 6 oz. of vodka.
  8. Add a splash of your favorite dark rum.
  9. Fill the remainder of the shaker with crushed ice, cap and shake vigorously until the drink is well mixed.
  10. Strain the The Wine Lover’s Martini into two awaiting glasses.
  11. Garnish with a slice of orange and serve.

Get it Right with White

This lovely cocktail may also be made with your favorite white wine as well. The more bold and robust the flavors of the wine, the more robust the beverage will taste. To make The White Wine Lover’s Martini using white wine, simply add three parts vodka for every one part of white wine. Follow with crushed ice, shake vigorously and pour into awaiting martini glasses. In this way, the white wine acts like vermouth would in a traditional martini. Garnish the White Wine Lover’s Martini with whatever flavors are present in the white wine. For instance if there are hints of pair, garnish with a slice of pair.

Add a Shot of Port

Another variation on The Wine Lover’s Martini is to use port wine. Traditionally thick and sweet in nature, the port wine will be thinned and it’s flavor less intense when assembling the drink. Simply use four parts of vodka for every one part of port wine when mixing.

Keep Away from Gin

Gin has a very distinct taste because of the infusion of the juniper berries, The Wine Lover’s Martini really works best using vodka because the flavors of the wine are really left unencumbered to mix with the vodka.
