Canned beer and cheap wine can be sipped on any occasion. Make Valentine's Day special with a classy cocktail or quality wine.

Whether paired with a meal or enjoyed on its own, Valentine's Day cocktails should enhance the romance, not detract from it. In lieu of the same old can of beer or bottle of vino, step it up a notch with these festive options.

For Fun & Fizzy: Champagnes/Sparkling Wines

For a first date or early stage relationship, Valentine's Day should be kept lighthearted and fun. Chill a bottle of champagne or sparkling white or rose wine. Despite common misconceptions, quality sparkling wines can be quite economical. With a pink hue, Gruet Methode Champenoise Rose is dry, fruity, and perfect for Valentine's Day. Grown in New Mexico, this limited production sparkling runs for only $16 a bottle.

If a French champagne seems a prerequisite to impress with, the popular wine blog "Good Wine Under $20" recommends the NV Beaumont des Crayeres Brut Grande Reserve. Genuinely Fench and grown for more than 50 years, this is a steal at around $25.

Spice Up a Serious Relationship: Sensual Red Wines

Add some unexpected zest to a Valentine's tradition with a spicy, peppery wine, like a Grenache, a Syrah, or a Zinfandel.

Grenache, known as Garnacha in Spain, is a great pair for Latin fare, a less acidic wine with spicy, fruity notes. Syrah, also known as Shiraz for the variety grown in Austrailia, makes a great companion for grilled beef or lamb dishes, and has delightful notes of black pepper and dark chocolate. Zinfandel, with hints of anise seed, pepper, and blackberry, is a delicious partner for pork and dishes made with soft cheeses.

Avoid the standard Cabernets, Merlots, and Pinot Noirs that you enjoy every night. Try one of the sophisticated alternatives above, and your partner will be impressed.

A Proper Proposal: Dessert Cocktails

If a proposal is in the cards this Valentine's Day, present the ring alongside a cupid-themed cocktail. Cherry, chocolate, and nutty-flavored liqueurs are a perfect compliment to the day. Try Amaretto with a splash of cream and a splash of grenadine. If V-Day is chilly this year, try a peppermint hot cocoa with Godiva chocolate liqueur, topped with whipped cream and heart-shaped sprinkles.

The best idea is to come up with a custom concoction--name it after your sweetie and serve on a Valentine's-themed cocktail napkin. The personalized touch is sure to delight.

Whether Valentine's Day entails take-out and a DVD or a five-star restaurant and caviar, the right cocktail can add a little something extra to the celebration.
